Maximum Resist increases the 75% ceiling which applies to player and mercenary resistance to an absolute maximum 95%, although additional resistance needs to be applied to reach the new ceiling. For example, Resist 75% with +20% Maximum Resist needs Resist +20% to reach Resist 95%.
Increasing the resistance ceiling significantly decreases damage applied, even when compared to the 75% ceiling. For example, increasing resistance from 75% to 85% decreases damage from 25% to 15%, multiplying effective life by 1 2/3 (25/15); increasing it from 85% to 95% decreases damage from 15% to 5%, multiplying effective life by 3 (15/5) (the effect on effective life becomes more significant as resistance increases).
The table below lists multipliers of effective life (or damage) as resistance increases (or decreases) beyond the 75% ceiling:

When combined with integer Absorb, damage can often be completely negated.
