- With the exception of the Halls of Pain and the inclusion of the Pandemonium Event's Furnace of Pain, all areas in which monsters randomly spawn in Act 5 must always contain at least one ranged monster. This is done by selecting one monster from among the ranged types before selecting from all remaining monsters as normal. This means ranged monsters are more likely to be selected. [1]
- For example, when three monsters are selected from ten to populate an area and four of those ten are ranged, one of those four is selected, then one of the remaining nine and finally one of the remaining eight. Consequently, the chance of a particular ranged type not being selected is 3/4 * 8/9 * 7/9 or 7/12, so the chance of it being selected is 5/12 (~42%); the chance of a particular monster that is not ranged not being selected is 8/9 * 7/8 or 7/9, so the chance of it being selected is just 2/9 (~22%).
- Act 5 areas in Normal are always populated by the same monsters, so the following ranged type selection chances only apply in Nightmare and Hell:
- All areas select three monsters from ten, with the exception of the Bloody Foothills (two from ten) and the Furnace of Pain (three from four).
- Chance of a particular monster that is not ranged being selected is 1/9 (~11%) in the Bloody Foothills, 1/3 (~33%) in the Furnace of Pain and 2/9 (~22%) in all other areas listed above.
